NXP has signed an agreement with TSMC to use 5nm technology to improve its automotive platform. This makes NXP the first TSMC customer to utilize the technology in the automotive industry.
In order to meet the inclusive electronic transformation of automobiles, manufacturers are looking for processors that are faster, more powerful and more efficient, while improving vital safety and quality issues. These qualities allow them to have more flexibility in finding engineering solutions, but they also need to keep in mind the energy savings in the vehicle's networking structure.
TSMC's 5nm development allows for a 20% increase in processing speed, and a 40% reduction in power consumption, compared to the previous 7nm technology. The transition to 5nm technology will allow car manufacturers to significantly transform their vehicles through feature enhancements, slightly simplify the increasingly complex integrated device architecture, and make it easier for powerful computing systems to hit the road.
The transition to 5nm technology will enable manufacturers with applications such as unified vehicle cockpits, high efficiency domain controllers, autonomous driving, advanced networking, hybrid traction control and integrated chassis control.
